Dad & Pat’s Trip

28 Apr

Here are some pictures from when my dad and brother were up for a visit:

The first project of the Mario Brothers nursery! YAY! You might remember my inspiration piece for this. Well, the hills at the top and the back of the bookcase are going to be painted like the hills here, the sides and the shelves will be white, (I suppose they should probably be brown/tan, but no.) and the cubby that my dad is by (holding the door up since it wasn’t attached yet) will be painted like this. Dad is probably going to be mad that I put the picture of him on the blog, but he doesn’t look weird in it. He should be proud of his creation! It’s really just great. 😀

I’ve already primed most of this, and I hope this weekend is warm so I can finish painting it.

We also went to visit my cousin and her husband (my second cousin, Julia, was at her grandmother’s house, so we didn’t see her.) and went out to dinner.  It was nice, but I didn’t take any pictures but this as we were getting off the thruway.

Mostly we just hung out around the house.  I felt bad because I couldn’t really take off any time from work (saving it for the baby and all) but my dad accomplished a LOT while I was gone.

  • Fixed my leaky toilet
  • Took apart my dryer and put it back together b/c he couldn’t find out why it wasn’t heating up.  Doing this somehow fixed whatever the problem was…
  • Washed plenty of dishes
  • Did two loads of laundry to prove that the dryer really was fixed and it wasn’t a fluke.  (Although, I haven’t used it yet so we shall see if it just likes him…)
  • Fixed the baseboard in the nursery and attached the vent to the wall (It wouldn’t stay in before.)
  • Cleaned my gutters on the first floor
  • Got my car washed and vacuumed the inside of it
  • Played with Kipp
  • Re-caulked the shower and took off the water saver from the shower head.  I thought we had poor water pressure, but apparently it was the shower head?
  • Put together the Mario bookcase!  (Well, the bookcase itself was from craigslist, but he cut out and  added the hills/put together the cubby.)
  • Fixed my Christmas tree.  (Kipp had chewed through the cord, naughty puppy.)

I feel like there is more, but I can’t think of what else to add…  Still, quite the impressive list, no?

And this picture is for you, Mom.  The twins in front of the Easter Egg Tree.   I left it up just for their trip.  Like our awkward “forced kid photo” faces?

John’s Birthday Present

26 Apr

Two posts in one day! OMG! On the 13th, I hinted about this on the blog’s facebook page, and am about a week late getting it up. Sorry! I wanted to wait until John got it before posting about it, and then got caught up in the family visit. But anyway.

Here she is! Originally, I was just going to buy one of those plastic photo wallet inserts and put a bunch of photos in there, but I couldn’t find any in the stores I went to. Apparently, they don’t make them anymore (?) and I thought of the idea way too late to order one from an online shop. So, I had to make my own!

I forget how many exactly, but I think it held about 12 photos in all.  And ended up being WAY too thick for a wallet, but it still came out cute!  And it counts as another Destash-Along project because I just used scrapbook paper, self-adhesive ribbon, and embroidery thread from my stash.  The only thing I had to get (and I probably didn’t actually have to get it) was the clear plastic to protect the photos.  I just took a sheet from work and used that.  So, no money spent!

First, I made a template for my pages out of some white card stock.  I meant to save it, scan it in, and make it available as a free pdf download, but I can’t find it anywhere, so I don’t think I saved it.  😦  Sorry.

I found that folding the sheet over before tracing the squares helped A LOT; as it was easier to match the template up with the paper and it stayed in place better.  And cutting one square out of the end and then folding it over and tracing the hole you just cut out to make the middle ones made things more symmetrical.  Also, use an x-acto knife if you can.  I used scissors and it wasn’t fun.  Repeat until you have all of your pages cut out.

To put the pages together I just used a lot of glue, tape, and the self adhesive ribbon.  I first glued the clear plastic to the insides of the paper, then folded the ends in towards the middle, and then tapped the pictures to the back side of the paper where I wanted them.  (Two pictures for each section, backs together so that the pages were double sided.)  I then used self adhesive ribbon down the center of the page to keep the centers down.  The edges were kept together with glue.

I’m POSITIVE there are better ways to do this, but I made this at work, and had to use what I had on hand.  The glue part was really fussy and my crappy work glue stick wasn’t quite strong enough for the plastic sheets.  I longed for my scrap booking glue, but it was at home in my craft room, and I needed to get this out in the mail THAT DAY.  So I kept on.

To make the cover, I cut out a long piece of black card stock and rounded the edges on one side.  I made it a lot longer than I needed to, so that it didn’t come out too short when the book was closed.  I then paper clipped all the pages and the cover together and sewed up the seam with embroidery thread.  I then trimmed the long end of the cover and rounded the edges and tied some embroidery thread around the whole thing.  To finish it off, I put more self-adhesive ribbon over the seam on the outside to cover my knots.

Fin!  Did that tutorial make sense?  And best of all, it got to John on time and he liked it!  😀

Happy Bench Monday

26 Apr

I had a great week with my Dad and brother in town. The house is now quiet and lonely. I have a lot of catching up to do. Until then, Happy Bench Monday!

Spring Flowers

13 Apr

Sorry I haven’t been posting much; life has been mildly hectic. My basement flooded, I haven’t been sleeping well, and when I’ve been up to doing stuff, I’ve been getting the house ready for my dad and brother to come visit me next week!

So, for now, here are some pictures of flowers that I took over the weekend while Kipp and I were on a walk. I would have a nice sunset picture to go along with it, but they all came out blurry. Trying to take a picture with an impatient puppy who just wants to GO is hard!

Bunny Napkin Rings

6 Apr

Here is the finished product of what I hinted about on the facebook fan page on Sunday! I wanted to post these yesterday, but I was having technical difficulties. Actually, now that I think about it, technology has pretty much been hating on me all week.

I made these bunny napkin rings for my friend Christine’s family, since they were nice enough to invite me over for Easter dinner. I was running late on Sunday though, and didn’t get a chance to take a picture of them before I left, but I had brought my camera over to Christine’s house, so I just figured I’d take them there. However, when I got there, I realized that my memory stick was still in the card reader at my house. Fail! So I had to take these crappy pictures with my cell phone. 😦

When I went to upload them yesterday, my phone just started rebooting. Over and over and over. I went to the AT&T store to see if they could fix it, and they couldn’t. Apparently, you’re not supposed to have the same phone that you used in 2006, who knew? (lol) But the girl at the store gave me a memory card adapter so I was able to get most of the pictures off of the camera. There were some casualties though. 😦

The colors are most true in this photo. Anyway, I am counting these as a destash-along project because I made these from mostly my stash. The only things that aren’t stash are the heat & bond (because I didn’t own it.) and the napkins. (For the same reason.) All together they took about 3.5 hours, and I was really happy with how they came out. And the women of Christine’s family liked them, so that’s cool. The boys thought they were goofy and were afraid of dirtying the napkins, lol.

I made 8 in all, but her aunt had already taken hers by the time I took the photo, ha.

Bench Monday 04.05.10

5 Apr

I am having technical difficulties with the post I wanted to post, so instead, I’ll just post my Bench Monday photo. Happy Monday!
